BRIEF:
Family home in need of a kitchen, dining and office renovation.

The kitchen was very small in proportion to the open plan dining area and was tucked into a corner. The dining area was vast and underused. As there was a formal lounge at the front of the house and a casual living area beyond the dining area there was no need for another living space which is what the room had become. A kind of no mans land, dining/living/empty thoroughfare...and very dark. One window in the whole space and one in the kitchen. Cork tiled floor in a lovely hue of orange - not. The kitchen was very pokey an unpractical. Next to the kitchen is a good size study. The clients work from home quite a lot so easy access to the kitchen to make a coffee and grab a snack was a bonus.

During the space planning phase i could immediately see that dividing off the existing kitchen and making it into a butlers pantry and then installing a bigger, new kitchen with island bench in the no-mans land room would solve the layout issues. Still plenty of room for the dining space especially with the installation of custom made banquette seating to fit all the kids along. A natural 'corridor' was formed between the dining table and the island bench so we installed skylights above that corridor to bring much needed light into the spaces.

The new butlers pantry is spacious and has a breakfast bar area that can be also be used as a grown up bar space while entertaining utilising the bar fridge and wine storage in the overhead unit with glass door. There is also a coffee station with a space for the microwave, coffee machine, toaster and kettle - next to the double sink - perfect for making coffee during work breaks from the study next door. The main kitchen has double ovens, a large island and loads of drawer storage.

The study was fitted out with custom cabinetry to make working from home a practical and comfortable experience.

The proportions of the spaces now work and make sense. The flow and light has changed the way this family live and use the main hub of their home.
